3. The protagonist in the novel Stones is Garnet, who is easily scared, caring and a good man. Garnet is easily scared since when he was stuck in the church because of the winter blizzard all alone he was thinking “terrified again” (Bell51). This goes to show that he was frightened many times that night and therefore he is easily scared. He may be easily frightened but he is caring about his family and friends. He shows this when he warns his mom to “Be careful, mom. Don’t do anything dumb.” (Bell 98). This shows how he cares for his mother and wants her to stay safe. Garnet is a good man since he helped to put Hannah’s spirit to rest. He’s a good man because Raphella notices this and says “You are a good man, Garnet Havelock.” (Bell 261). This is how Garnet is easily scared, caring and a good man.

3. I agree with what Kristen said but I also disagree with it. I agree with it because I think that Garnet is caring and is a good man. But I disagree about that Garnet is scared easily. I disagree with this statement because Garnet does overcome most of his fears. For instance when Garnet wants to know more about Raphaella he overcomes his fear of her mother and confronts her to hear what she has to say. This proves that Garnet may be scared but he always conquers that fear and keeps on going.

3) These quotes are significant because they help with the character development of Garnet Havelock the protagonist of the novel. Throughout the story Garnet faces many challenging and difficult situations but does his best to get through them anyways. “I got a set of keys and Roy Week’s handwritten instructions from the mailbox and we drove farter into the estate.” (Bell 109) Garnet takes time out of his work and is willing to live on his own in order to stay at a friend of his dad’s trailer park and look after things while he is away. This proves that Garnet is a helpful person. “Over the next week or so, I watched my mother closely, after I heard her cry out in her sleep that first night. I stayed with her in the mornings until dad got home at noon, then went to school.” (Bell 210) This shows that Garnet was very concerned about his mother and wanted to look after her and make sure that she was ok. By doing so Garnet proves that he is a caring person. “As for her gift as she called it, well, I had been aware of that for a long time. Her remarkable ability to sense and interpret things was something I was used to.” (Bell 271) When Raphaella told Garnet that she was a physic Garnet accepted her and didn’t really care that she was different from others. Based on this Garnet is a non-judgmental person who is willing to accept people for who they are. Garnet Havelock is a very well developed character in the novel Stones.

The protagonist in this story is Garnet, who is a character with many different characteristics. There could be many possible views on Garnet. Some of Garnet’s characteristics include logical, brave and sometimes stubborn. There are many times during the story where all three of these are evident. “There were all kinds of things wrong with the scenario. First, how could you love someone that you didn’t know? You’d be completely ignorant of their personality. Maybe you just fell head over heels for a total bore, a real snooze-monger whose idea of excitement was reading the fine print on an insurance policy. Or maybe you were just dazzled by a serial killer-how would you have known?”(Bell 19) This is an example of how Garnet prefers logical thinking over unscientific assumptions with no proven evidence. Although Garnet is very logical, he later contradicts himself when he admits that he falls head over heels for Raphaella, who he had never talked to before. “I stayed clear of the beam so whoever was out there couldn’t see me. When my brain began to function again I realize that whoever it was would have to come in. But who was he? What was he doing, on foot, out in the storm? I bent down slowly and picked up the flashlight. “Who’s there?” I called out. Then louder, “Is there someone out there?” No answer, only the sighing of wind. I crept slowly to the window and, summoning my courage, raised the light to the glass.”(Bell 51) This clearly shows how brave Garnet is. Even though he did not know what danger he was getting himself into, he still took the chance and went to the window and looked outside. Although Garnet is a very kind person, he can also be stubborn. “I ran to the phone, jabbed the buttons. “Come on, come on!” I shouted as the ringing sounded. “Hello.” “Put Raphaella on.” “Who is -?” “Put Raphaella on the damn phone!”(Bell 185) This quote shows how stubborn Garnet can truly be. Even though earlier on in the book he is told to not call Raphaella’s house, he does anyway. Her mother always says that Raphaella is not in or that she can’t come to the phone. Despite this, he does not give up until he gets to speak to Raphaella.

3. I do agree that Garnet the protagonist of Stones, portrays a majority of what Kristen stated, however, I do not agree that the character is easily scared. Garnet throughout the novel continuously overcame his fears, during the events that involved the paranormal; therefore his is actually tremendously brave. It is a common misconception that those that are courageous have no fear, but in reality those that possess courage are the ones that are able to recognize and confront their fears. “When able to draw my breath by then, I freed myself from my backpack and ran to Raphaella, breaking into the circle of men” (Bell 257).The novel demonstrated the pervious statement in this passage because even though Garnet was winded and extremely feared the ghost men, had still managed to stand by Raphaella’s side, excepting that Raphaella and himself would most likely end up like Hannah. This is a fantastic model of courage because, it had clearly proved that Garnet has the ability to face danger, uncertainty and pain without being overcome and discouraged by fear. Therefore I do not believe that Garnet is easily frightened, yet that this character definitely possesses this important trait.

I am not sure if I agree with kirsteen. I feel that Garnet is caring and a good man, but I also feel that even though he was scared at that moment in the story, that is not his personality. I am sure that anyone who was in his position would be afraid. Especially since he was alone. I think that even though he was afraid at that point, he was very brave and courageous to go up to the window when he thought he saw someone there. Later on in the story, I feel that with all of the different events especially with Hannah, he became a lot more brave. With the amount of courage that it took for him to deal with all of the conflicts in the story, it is very unlikely that Garnet is easily scared.

Garnet Havelock is logically minded, determined and somewhat close-minded. Garnet displays his logic when he is talking about Romeo and Juliet in his English class. “Romeo and Juliet could not have been experienced true love. What they felt was lust. They wanted to get inside each other’s clothes.” (Bell, 23). I believe this statement is very true and very logical. Garnet showed true intellect and logic in this debate, which made me the reader, truly believe that Garnet is logically minded. Garnet shows he is truly determined when he stands up to a dangerous group of ghosts to easy another’s spirit. “They were shades, but they were as frightening as any mob of real men, rough and strong looking in homespun shirts and worn overalls and heavy boots.” (Bell, 254). This shows even though he is scared of facing these ghosts that he is determined enough to stand up to them even for someone else. Garnet shows he is close-minded when he is alone in an old church at night and hears voices. They seem to be ghosts but he is so close-minded he does not consider them to be anything but noise. “I lay down again, trembling. I began to reason with myself, word by unspoken word regaining confidence. I was imagining things.” (Bell, 54). Garnet Havelock has many characteristics but his most apparent are that he is logical, determined, and close-minded.

I agree with Kirisa that Garnet Havelock does not have a scared trait to his personality. Throughout many parts of the book Garnet shows bravery and even though he does get scared at certain parts throughout the novel especially when he is alone in the trailer he puts the fear aside and makes the best of the situation. “Able to draw breath by then, I freed myself from the backpack and ran to Raphaella, breaking into the circle of men. They fell back in an uneven line at the edge of the stream.” (Bell 257) During this scene Garnet and Raphaella are attacked by the men who killed Hannah and even though he is scared Garnet is more worried about protecting Raphaella and goes to help her. Garnet showed that he is a brave person because when he was scared, he thought about the people he loves and got over his fear in order to help them. Garnet Havelock is a brave man and not a scared man.
